Polymers production having desired functional groups,
especially for use in coating compositions by reacting polymer
precursor having specific nitrogen containing groups with compounds
containing the desired group and enolic carbonyl group.USE/ADVANTAGE -
The polymers are particularly useful as components of for example
protective or adhesive coating compositions for application to a
variety of surfaces. Such compositions may produce coatings with
improved film hardness, solvent and corrosion resistance, or decreased
water permeability. |

Acrylic polymer plastisol composition for e.g. coil
coating comprises single stage copolymer of methyl methacrylate
isobutyl methacrylate and optionally other monomers. In an acrylic
polymer plastisol composition the polymer is a single-stage copolymer
of (a) methyl methacrylate, (b) isobutyl methacrylate and (c)
optionally other monomers; the levels of monomers used in the
polymerisation, w.r.t. total wt. of monomers, are: (a) 20-70 wt.%, (b)
30-80% and (c) 0-48%. USE/ADVANTAGE - The composition. is used to give
abrasion- andcorrosion-inhibiting coatings for steel substrates, for
coil coatings, for sealing gaskets for caps and closures of
containers, or for interior coatings on metal containers (claimed).
The sealing gaskets are particularly used in food applications. Use of
isobutyl methacrylate gives a copolymer with excellent compatibility
with less expensive plasticisers, e.g. dioctyl or diisodecyl phthalate
or adipate, or diisononyl phthalate, without rendering the polymer
soft or conferring poor mechanical properties. |

Acrylic plastisol for coating steel - contains two
polymers and aplasticiser where one polymer is compatible, and the
other polymer is incompatible, with the plasticiser, and the particle
size of compatible polymer is controlled.Plastisol composition
comprising:(A) an organic plasticiser component , (B) an acrylic
polymer powder of weight average primary particle size = at least 0.4
mu m which is compatible with plasticiser and has been derived from an
aqueous acrylic polymer dispersion(s), where the acrylic polymer
component has a Tg at least 65°C, and (C) a polymer powder component
which is incompatible with the organic plasticiser component. Also
claimed is a process for the preparation of plastisol, the use of
plastisol and a plasticised product made from plastisol USE - Abrasion
and corrosion inhibiting coatings for steel substrates, coil coatings,
flooring wear layers, sealing gaskets for caps and closures of
containers and for screen printing of textiles, for wallpaper coatings,
for modelling clays, or for the provision of interior coatings of
metal containers. ADVANTAGE - The coatings do not yellow or degrade at
high temperatures to produce corrosive HCl, as is the case with PVC
plastisols. |
